Last tuesday, 28th of February, the European Union environment minister council agreed to reform the European Union emissions business system ( ETS ) over the 2012 – 2030 period. If they are able to come to a deffinitive agreement, they will promise to reduce emissions 43% in 2005. This agreement was backed by 19 countries, over 70% of the required minimun to aprove the agreement.
ETS was the first system in the world to control the pollutant emissions, and it is still the largest. Its objetive is to reduce pollution without the business signatures deciding to take their factories out of the European Union. It is applied to 11000 industrial plants with energy consumption, energy producers and airlines.
We await the agreement between the three institutions before summer to be able to modify a system against the increase of the greenhouse effect gases and so the EU can conform to its climate goals.
